I have received a number of text messages and emails asking if my family survived Hurricane Katrina. I appreciate all the inquiries and especially the prayers. Here is the news so far. My Mom is well taken care of, staying with her friend’s son who has power.

My sister, Liz, had a tree fall on her house in Jackson that ripped through the roof of her garage. No one was injured, but her home now requires costly repairs.

My brother, David, who lives at the Murrell family “farm” in Canton, reported countless fallen trees and fences, but no major damage to home or horses. Liz, David, and their families and neighbors will be without power for up to two weeks. Compared to millions on the Mississippi and Louisiana coastline, my family came out of this in good shape. Deborah’s sister, Donna, had to evacuate her home in the northern suburb of New Orleans.

She stayed with her daughter in a hotel in Alabama for a few days and is now heading to Georgia to stay with her aunt while her husband, Danny, a Coast Guard base commander, works around the clock rescuing victims in New Orleans. Thanks for your prayers and concern.
