The Power of Humility

Wed., September 06, 2006

Before I knew her, I used to watch her on TV boldly giving her opinion about controversial issues. Like most senators, she always came across confident, intelligent and passionate. I think being the sister of a martyred national hero added to the intimidation factor surrounding her. Being a foreigner, I always try my best to stay out of Philippine political discussions.

This lady's name and ideas were often in the middle of those heated debates I avoided. When I heard she was attending a small Bible study group one of our church members was leading, I began to pray for her. A couple of years later, when she started attending our church, I witnessed the gradual change in her countenance as she deepened her walk with the Lord. I will never forget the night I sat next to her at a party and heard the extended version of her testimony, complete with stories about her brother, Ninoy Aquino and her mother, Doña Aurora Aquino.

I felt like I was hearing first-hand what the next generation would read about in Philippine history books. Watching God transform people- whether a famous senator or an uneducated street vendor - is one of my real joys in life.
