Growth or Control?

Sun., March 05, 2006

I met for two days last week with fifteen veteran campus ministers to discuss the future direction of Every Nation Campus Ministries. We wrestled with several big-picture ministry questions such as: "what are we good at?" and "what do we need to change/adjust/correct/balance to be better?" We also discussed leadership questions like, "what type of leadership structure would be best at this time?" and "what type of leader or leaders do we need for this season?" Once again, Proverbs hit the nail on the head with that "wisdom in the counsel of a multitude" thing. One unforgettable nugget of wisdom was spoken by long-time UC-Berkeley minister, Billy Reader, when he quoted someone famous (I can't remember if he quoted Bill Hybels, Rick Warren, Jack Hayford, or Jack Black) who said something like this: "most leaders either structure for growth or for control." I have never thought of it exactly like that, but the more I think about it, the more it seems to be true. As I have pondered Billy's quote, I realize that we structured our Manila church for growth, not control. Reading Acts and the epistles it seems the early church was structured for growth, not control. The church I lead in Manila has been out of (my) control for many years. Growth tends to do that to a church or ministry. On the other hand, control tends to stop growth.
