Blast from the Past: "Big Tommy" in Manila

Thu., May 18, 2006

Got a note in my office yesterday morning informing me that an old friend, Tom "Big Tommy" Sirotnak, from the USA was in town. He was just passing through Manila on his way to participate in an evangelistic crusade on another island south of here, so he would be in town less than twenty-four hours. I called him back, cleared my schedule, and spent the rest of the afternoon with Tom and his friend, Pastor Mel Ayres.

In an attempt to help them fight jetlag and stay awake, I fed them a late lunch at a local favorite, McDonald's.  Some of you VCF old-timers may remember that Tom participated in our original Makati church-plant in 1986 and several Champions outreaches in the next few years. I am thankful for the many short-term missionaries, like Tom, who participated in outreaches in the '80's that helped establish VCF in the Philippines.

Some of you may remember Tom as that guy who made such a mess in our office by ripping all the phone books to shreds, or as the guy who snapped handcuffs as though they were made of plastic, or you may remember him as the big American who prayed for the sick for hours after every evangelistic meeting. I pray many will be saved and healed as Tom, Pastor Mel, and their team minister the Gospel to thousands in Roxas City this week.
